Editor’s note: How good were the 1975 Cincinnati Reds? The best way to end the speculation is to challenge the team with a 162-game season against some great teams. This is a series that will include each game played with the Strat-o-Matic cards and dice, while hoping to reach the 108-54 record that the Reds had that season. Game stories will be published periodically on Press Room Pass through out the year. What’s your predicted victory total?
St. Louis pitcher Dick Hughes threw a wrench in the Big Red Machine for the second time this season.
The Cardinals posted a 3-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Riverfront Stadium as Hughes tossed another complete game.
Earlier this season, Hughes held the Reds to six hits in a 5-2 win at Busch Stadium. This time around the Reds managed just five hits as Hughes fanned eight.
In the fourth inning, Bobby Tolan and Julian Javier began the frame for St. Louis against Reds starter Gary Nolan with back-to-back singles. Phil Gagliano drove in Tolan with a single to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Hughes gave up a solo homer to Dan Driessen in the seventh that tied the affair 1-1.
Tim McCarver blasted a two-run homer in the eighth off Nolan (13-10) that ended the day for the Reds pitcher.
Fred Norman (13-9) is slated to start for the Reds in the series finale of the four-game set with the Cardinals. Steve Carlton is scheduled for St. Louis as the two teams will also end their season series.
For the Reds, it is the last game against teams from the East Division.
