A power surge by Montreal at Veterans Stadium helped the Expos beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-2.
The Expos are set to meet the (7) Pittsburgh Pirates at Three Rivers Stadium in the finale of the Mike Schmidt Bracket of the 1977 Tournament.
Two home runs hurt Philadelphia starter Steve Carlton as Del Unser had a two-run shot in the second and Gary Carter hit a solo blast in the fourth.
Despite the homers, Carlton was still around in the fifth. However, the lefty would be gone without retiring a batter in the frame.
Larry Parrish walked to begin the rally and Chris Speier added a single.
Dave Cash knocked in the first run with a single and Warren Cromartie ended the day for Carlton as his RBI single made it 5-0.
Warren Brusstar took over on the mound for Carlton. With the entire Philadelphia infield playing in, Andre Dawson hit a grounder to Larry Bowa and the shortstop gunned down Speier at the plate. Carter lined into a double play that ended the inning.
Brusstar tossed two more scoreless innings with Tug McGraw working the final two as the Phillies tried to comeback.
The Phillies were able to get on the scoreboard in the seventh against Montreal starter Wayne Twitchell.
Richie Hebner drove in the first run with a single. Bob Boone‘s RBI single ended the game for Twitchell as Don Stanhouse was called from the bullpen.
Stanhouse picked up the save as he blanked the Phillies the rest of the way.
