New York’s Lou Piniella helped the Yankees get out to an early lead and hold on for a 5-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.
With the win, New York advances to the semifinals of the 1977 Tournament as the Yankees entertain the winner of the (15) Montreal Expos at (7) Pittsburgh Pirates contest.
The Yankees scored twice against Baltimore starter Rudy May in the first inning.
Chris Chambliss drove in the first run with a single before Piniella made it 2-0 with a RBI double.
Baltimore picked up a run in the second when Rick Dempsey grounded into a double play.
In the third, Chambliss singled with one out and Piniella followed with a two-run blast and the Yankees were on their way to a win.
Yankees starter Ed Figueroa held Baltimore’s offense in check on four hits until the top of the eighth inning when he surrendered a two-run homer to Ken Singleton that brought the Orioles to within a run.
A solo homer by Reggie Jackson off May in the bottom of the eighth gave Sparky Lyle some breathing room as closed the door by getting the final five outs of the affair to earn a save.
