Editor’s note: The 1980 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for any games involving American League teams. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.
The Philadelphia Phillies pulled away from the Baltimore Orioles in the opener of the 1980 championship series on the way to an 8-1 victory at Memorial Stadium.
With the score tied at 1-1, the Phillies scored twice against Baltimore starter Steve Stone (0-1) in the seventh inning.
Stone retired the first hitter, but walked Bob Boone and Larry Bowa. Pete Rose grounded out to advance the runners before Bake McBride‘s two-run single put the Phillies on top for good 3-1.
The eighth inning turned out to be the end of the hopes for the Orioles as the Phillies scored five times to silence the Baltimore fans.
Greg Luzinski finished off Stone with with his second solo homer of the contest to begin the decisive rally. His other blast came in the fourth.
Tippy Martinez didn’t fare much better as he surrendered three straight singles to Garry Maddox, Lonnie Smith and Manny Trillo. Trillo’s hit made it 5-1.
Sammy Stewart took over for Martinez and he promptly walked Boone to load the bases. Larry Bowa reached on an error by Eddie Murray that allowed another run to come home.
Two batters later, Mike Schmidt‘s two-run single took care of Stewart and the Phillies led by seven. Dennis Martinez went to the mound to get Luzinski on a lineout.
After three perfect frames to begin the affair, Steve Carlton (1-0) went the distance for the Phillies giving up four hits with six strikeouts.
Al Bumbry got Baltimore’s first hit with a single to start the fourth. Bumbry swiped second and then scored on a RBI single by Doug DeCinces.
Rookie Marty Bystrom gets the start in game two for the Phillies, while Baltimore counters with Scott McGregor.
