Baltimore’s Jim Palmer tossed a three-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies, while teammate Al Bumbry ignited the Orioles offense as they posted a 3-0 victory in game three of the 1980 championship series.
The Phillies now have a two games to one advantage in the best of seven series despite the loss at Veterans Stadium.
Bumbry’s two-run single in the third put Baltimore on top 2-0 against Phillies starter Dick Ruthven (0-1).
Meanwhile on the mound for the Orioles, Palmer didn’t allow a hit until the fourth when he gave up a two-out single to Mike Schmidt. He would later give up singles to Greg Luzinski in the seventh and Larry Bowa in the eighth.
The Orioles picked up their final run in the seventh as Bumbry singled to two outs to begin the rally. Bumbry swiped second and then scored on a single by John Lowenstein.
Bumbry had a game-high three hits for the Orioles.
Game four will feature the starters from the opener as the Orioles look to even the series.
Philadelphia’s Steve Carlton (1-0) goes for his second victory of the series, while Steve Stone (0-1) hopes for a better outing for Baltimore.
