Philadelphia’s offense pounded out 18 hits as the Phillies beat Baltimore 8-0 in game five of the 1980 Tournament Championship Series.
Game six of the best of seven is back in Baltimore. The Phillies will send Dick Ruthven (0-1) to the mound as they look to clinch the title. The Orioles hope that Jim Palmer (1-0) can win his second start of the series to send it to a seventh contest in Memorial Stadium.
Pete Rose led off game five for the Phillies with a homer to set the tone and the Veterans Stadium crowd never stopped cheering.
The Phillies scored three times in the bottom of the first off Baltimore starter Scott McGregor (0-2), who would be gone before the end of the fifth inning.
From that point, starting pitcher Marty Bystrom (2-0) took over for Philadelphia as he allowed eight hits, but was able to prevent the Phillies from scoring.
Greg Luzinski‘s RBI double produced the second run for Philadelphia, while Garry Maddox ended the rally with a sacrifice fly.
Luzinski added a run-scoring single in the third to put Philadelphia on top 4-0.
In the fifth, Philadelphia loaded the bases before Tippy Martinez retired Bob Boone for the final out on a ground ball as the Phillies failed to score.
A wild pitch by Martinez in the sixth added another run for the Phillies, while Maddox picked up a RBI single off Sammy Stewart to make it 6-0.
Larry Bowa drove in the last two runs for the Phillies in the seventh off Stewart, who would be replaced by Tim Stoddard. The new hurler retire the side in the seventh and eighth.
