1980 Tournament: Championship Series G6

Editor’s note: The 1980 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for any games involving American League teams. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.

There will be a game seven.

Jim Palmer scattered 10 hits and worked out of a few jams as the Baltimore Orioles posted a 2-1 victory in game six over the Philadelphia Philles to force a final contest in the best of seven 1980 Tournament Championship Series.

The seventh contest in Memorial Stadium will feature the two aces from each team. Steve Carlton (1-1) gets the ball for the Phillies, while the Orioles counter with Steve Stone (1-1).

Needing a win to even the series, Al Bumbry led off the bottom of the first with a homer off Philadelphia starter Dick Ruthven.

In the third, Ken Singleton‘s RBI single put the Orioles on top 2-0.

The Phillies picked up their run in the top of the seventh.

With one out, Larry Bowa singled and then swiped second before he scored on a double by Pete Rose.

Palmer tired in the ninth as he walked Bowa. After the Philadelphia shortstop stole second, Rose grounded out to Palmer.

Bake McBride drew walk and Palmer was finished as he couldn’t talk Baltimore manager Earl Weaver out of being replaced.

Tim Stoddard was called from the bullpen. He earned a save after fanning Mike Schmidt and retiring Greg Luzinski on a fly ball.
