Mike Schmidt started and ended Philadelphia’s 7-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the semifinals of the 1980 National League Tournament.

The Phillies move on face Cincinnati in the championship contest at Veterans Stadium.

Schmidt hit two-run homers in the first and ninth, while adding a RBI single in the third to lead the Phillies.

When Manny Trillo hit a solo blast off Don Sutton in the fourth, the Phillies led 4-0 and the Dodgers starter headed to the showers.

It took the Dodgers until the sixth to muster some offense against Philadelphia starter Marty Bystrom.

Davey Lopes ignited the Dodgers with a single and a stolen a base before Bystrom retired Rick Monday and Steve Garvey.

Dusty Baker‘s run-scoring single made it 4-1 as the Dodgers began to apply pressure. Ron Cey added to the rally with another single.

Reggie Smith drilled a three-run bomb to tie the contest at 4-4, which ended the day for Bystrom.

Eventual winning pitcher Warren Brusstar (1-0) finished off the rally for the Phillies as he got Pedro Guerrero to hit a fly ball to center.

The Phillies had an answer in the eighth as the Dodgers had Bobby Castillo (0-1) on the mound.

Greg Luzinski walked, but Garry Maddox hit into a double play before the Phillies came to life as Lonnie Smith doubled.

Trillo’s RBI single gave the Phillies a 5-4 advantage.

In the bottom of the eighth, Brusstar got the first two outs before giving up a double to Cey. Tug McGraw came on to induce Reggie Smith to hit a fly ball to right.

Schmidt’s homer in the ninth allowed McGraw to relax and work a perfect bottom of the frame to earn a save.
