Editor’s note: The 1980 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for any games involving American League teams. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.
The Philadelphia Phillies did it again.
For the second time in the 1980 National League Tournament, the Phillies won in walk-off style and this victory for for the title.
A two-out single by Pete Rose in the bottom of the 13th delighted the Veterans Stadium crowd as the Phillies defeated the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 to advance to the best of seven championship series against the Baltimore Orioles. The Phillies beat Pittsburgh 4-3 in the second round on a two-run single in the ninth by Mike Schmidt.
With the score tied at 2-2, Lonnie Smith led off the frame with a single off Reds reliever Joe Price, who entered the affair in the 11th inning.
Smith stole second before Price retired Manny Trillo and fanned Bob Boone. Larry Bowa‘s infield single moved Smith to third to set the stage for Rose’s game-winner.
Cincinnati starter Mario Soto and Philadelphia’s Dick Ruthven kept the game scoreless until the top of the sixth when the Reds took the lead on a sacrifice fly by George Foster.
The Phillies grabbed a 2-1 advantage in the seventh on a RBI single by Boone and a sacrifice fly by Rose.
Ken Griffey tied the contest at 2-2 with a RBI double in the eighth as Ruthven’s day came to an end. Tug McGraw was able to get the final two outs to work out of the threat.
In the bottom of the eighth, Soto got in big trouble as Greg Luzinski singled and Greg Gross walked. Gross was subbing for an injured Garry Maddox.
Tom Hume was called out of the Reds bullpen and gave up an infield single to Smith to load the bases.
Good fortune took over for the Reds as Trillo lined into a triple play with Ray Knight starting the rally killing event.
McGraw and Hume both worked out of situtaions to keep their respective team’s alive. Kevin Saucier (1-0) would earn the victory tossing the final two innings for the Phillies, while Price (0-1) was tagged with the loss.
