Editor’s note: The 1994 playoff games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for the American League contests as well as when those teams are at home during the World Series. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.
A three-run homer by David Justice proved to be the difference as the Atlanta Braves advanced to the National League Championship Series with a 4-3 victory over the Montreal Expos.
The win allowed the Braves to take the best-of-five NL Division Series three games to two.
Atlanta is set to meet the winner of the other NLDS, which is tied a 2-2. The Cincinnai Reds entertain the Los Angeles Dodgers in the fifth game.
With the scored tied at 1-1 in the top of the fourth, Ryan Klesko‘s single with one out began the rally against Montreal starter Pedro Martinez.
Fred McGriff followed with a double before Justice hammered his shot that put the Braves up 4-1.
The Expos rallied in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run single by Larry Walker off Atlanta starter Tom Glavine, but it wouldn’t be enough to overtake the Braves as Greg McMichael shut down Montreal in the eighth before tossing a perfect ninth.
Montreal grabbed an early lead as Marquis Grissom walked, stole second and scored on a single by Moises Alou.
Atlanta tied it in the second as McGriff had a solo homer.
Glavine (2-0) won his second contest of the series as he gave up six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Martinez (0-2) suffered the loss as he surrendered all four runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Kirk Rueter had three scoreless frames before John Wetteland finished the final inning.
