1994 Post-Season: Braves at Reds G1

Editor’s note: The 1994 playoff games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for the American League contests as well as when those teams are at home during the World Series. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.

The Atlanta Braves outlasted in the Cincinnati Reds in the longest game of the post-season with a 7-5 victory in 15 innings in the opener of the National League Championship Series.

Game two of the series in Cincinnati’s Riverfront Stadium features Greg Maddux (1-1) on the mound for the Braves, while the Reds counter with Jose Rijo (1-0).

Fred McGriff and David Justice drilled back-to-back solo homers in the top of the 15th for the Braves off John Roper.

Atlanta built a 5-2 lead before the Reds bounced back to tie the affair by the seventh frame.

McGriff smashed a three-run homer in the first off Reds starter Erik Hanson, while the Reds got a two-run blast from Kevin Mitchell in the bottom of the inning off Steve Avery.

A RBI triple by Justice in the third added to Atlanta’s lead before Mark Lemke knocked in the fifth tally for the Braves with a single in the fourth.

The Reds began their road back in the fifth as Barry Larkin had a RBI single before another run scored on an error by the Braves.

Mitchell’s solo shot off Mark Wohlers in the seventh tied the contest at 5-5.

Avery lasted five innings for the Braves as he was followed by Wohlers, Mike Stanton, Greg McMichael, John Smoltz and Kent Mercker. Mercker (1-0) got the win as he walked a batter in the bottom of the 15th, but the Reds couldn’t mount a rally.

Hanson also worked five innings for Cincinnati as he allowed five runs. Chuck McElroy, Hector Carrasco, Tom Browning and Jeff Brantley all kept the Braves off the scoreboard. Roper (0-1) was tagged with the loss.
