Editor’s note: The 1994 playoff games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for the American League contests as well as when those teams are at home during the World Series. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.
Ed Taubensee‘s solo homer in the bottom of the 12th inning proved to be Cincinati’s ticket to the World Series as the Reds outlasted the Atlanta Braves 4-3.
With the win, the Reds claim the best-of-seven National League Championship Series four games to two.
Cincinnati travels to Chicago to face the American League champion White Sox in Comiskey Park for the first two contests of the World Series.
Entering the bottom of the 12th, John Smoltz was the third pitcher of the affair for the Braves.
The Atlanta right hander fanned Reggie Sanders before Taubensee stepped to the plate to send the Riverfront Stadium crowd into a frenzy with his blast.
Early Lead for Cincinnati
The Reds picked up a pair of runs in the first inning off Braves starter Greg Maddux to take the lead.
Hal Morris had a RBI double and later in the frame Tony Fernandez added a run-scoring single.
Both teams scored in the second inning as the Reds hung on to a 3-1 advantage.
Mark Lemke had a RBI single off Reds starter Jose Rijo before Cincinnati’s Barry Larkin knocked in a run with a double.
It didn’t take long for the Braves to tie it at 3-3 as Ryan Klesko drilled a two-run shot in the third off Rijo.
Maddux and Rijo settled down and both pitchers kept the score the same through nine innings.
Greg McMichael tossed two scoreless innings in relief of Maddox, while Chuck McElroy took over for Rijo in the 11th.
McElroy (2-0) picked up the win for the Reds, while Smoltz (0-1) was tagged with the loss.
Maddux allowed three runs on eight hits and fanned seven. In his 10 innings, Rijo gave up six hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
