Editor’s note: The 1994 playoff games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for the American League contests as well as when those teams are at home during the World Series. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.
Facing elimination in the best-of-five National League Division Series on the road, the Los Angeles Dodgers responded with a 5-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in game three.
With Cincinnati now leading the series 2-1, the Reds will have Jose Rijo (1-0) on the mound in game four as the Dodgers give the ball to Ramon Martinez (0-1).
Cincinnati broke open a scoreless affair with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth against Dodgers starter Orel Hershiser.
Bret Boone‘s two-run double gave the Reds and lead that didn’t last very long as the Dodgers would quickly answer in the top of the seventh.
Tim Wallach got things rolling against Reds starter Erik Hanson with a RBI double before Eric Karros tied it at 2-2 with a run-scoring single.
Henry Rodriguez ended the day for Hanson as he hammered a two-run homer to give Los Angeles the lead.
The Reds answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI ground out by pinch-hitter Brian Hunter.
Mike Piazza‘a run-scoring single in the eighth off Pete Schourek produced the final tally of the contest.
Hershiser (1-0) got the win for the Dodgers as he gave up three runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts in seven innings. Roger McDowell tossed a scoreless eight, while Todd Worrell earned a save with a perfect ninth.
Hanson (0-1) was tagged with the loss in 7⅓ innings allowing four runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Chuck McElroy, Schourek and Hector Carrasco went the rest of the way for the Reds surrendering just the RBI single to Piazza.
