1994 Post-Season: Dodgers at Reds G4

Editor’s note: The 1994 playoff games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for the American League contests as well as when those teams are at home during the World Series. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.

The offense for the Los Angeles Dodgers pounded out 14 hits, while taking advantage of some mistakes by the Cincinnati Reds to post an 11-4 victory.

With the win by the Dodgers, the best-of-five National League Division Series is even at two games apiece heading into the finale at Riverfront Stadium.

Game five will feature the starters from the second contest in the series as John Smiley (1-0) looks to get the Reds back on track, while Kevin Gross (0-1) hopes lead the Dodgers to a third straight victory.

Los Angeles scored five times in the top of the third against Reds starter Jose Rijo to take control of the affair.

Delino DeShields had a sacrifice fly before a RBI double by Mike Piazza.

After Tim Wallach walked to load the bases, Eric Karros hit a ball to left that turned into a three-base error by Reds outfielder Kevin Mitchell. The end result was a 5-0 lead by the Dodgers.

Rijo had a scoreless fourth, but the fifth would be his final frame as Karros drilled a three-run homer to make it 8-0.

Cincinnati answered in the sixth against Los Angeles starter Ramon Martinez as Mitchell tripled to drive in a run before he scored on a homer by Bret Boone that cut the Reds deficit to 8-3.

The Dodgers added a run in the seventh when Henry Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly off Chuck McElroy.

A solo homer by Tony Fernandez produced the final tally for the Reds in the eighth.

In the ninth, the Dodgers added two more runs as Piazza smash a solo shot before another score came home on an error by Fernandez.

Martinez (1-1) picked up the win as he left with two outs in the eighth after giving up all four Cincinnati runs on nine hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Omar Daal finished up allowing a double by Larkin, while fanning three.

Rijo (1-1) went five innings surrendering eight runs with five being earned. He gave up nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

McElroy, Pete Schourek and Jeff Brantley finished up for the Reds and all of them allowed a run.
