Editor’s note: The 1994 playoff games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for the American League contests as well as when those teams are at home during the World Series. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.
A three-run homer by Manny Ramirez held up as the only scoring as the Cleveland Indians advanced to the American League Championship Series with a 3-0 win over the New York Yankees.
With the win in the fifth and deciding contest of the AL Division Series at Yankee Stadium, the Indians are preparing to face the winner of the best-of-five series between the Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers. The fifth game in that series takes place in Chicago.
Back-to-back singles by Eddie Murray and Paul Sorrento against New York starter Jim Abbott led to Cleveland’s outburst as Ramirez followed with his blast that put the Indians up by three runs.
Charles Nagy (1-1) went the distance for Cleveland as he limited the Yankees to four hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Nagy was perfect until the fourth when Luis Polonoa singled. Paul O’Neill added a single in the fourth, but Nagy got out of the mess as Danny Tartabull hit into a double play.
New York’s other hits were both singles by Mike Stanley in the fifth and Mike Gallego in the eighth.
Abbott (1-1) also stuck around for a complete game as he allowed seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
