Editor’s note: The 1994 playoff games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for the American League contests as well as when those teams are at home during the World Series. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.
The Chicago White Sox completed comeback with a 14-5 victory over the Texas Rangers to take the finale of best-of-five American League Division Series.
With their third straight win, the White Sox move on to the AL Championship Series to meet the Cleveland Indians.
Chicago hosts the opener of the series with Wilson Alvarez (1-0) scheduled to be on the mound for the White Sox with Mark Clark (1-0) getting the ball for the Indians.
The White Sox offense broke a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the fourth as they sent 11 batters to the plate and scored eight times to take control of the contest.
Chicago tagged three different Texas pitchers in the onslaught.
Tim Raines gave the Chicago a 7-5 lead with a two-run single off Rangers starter Kevin Brown. Julio Franco smashed a three-run homer off Bruce Hurst.
A pitching change to another lefty, Rick Honeycutt, allowed Ron Karkovice to drill a three-run pinch-hit long ball that capped the rally as Chicago led 13-5.
Frank Thomas hit a solo homer off Jay Howell in the eighth for the last tally of the game for Chicago.
Alex Fernandez (1-1) went the distance for Chicago as he gave up 11 hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
Brown (1-1) got the loss as he left with out retiring a batter in the fourth giving up eight runs on six hits with four walks and a strikeout.
Hurst was charged with two runs, while Honeycutt gave up three and Howell one. Tom Henke who worked in the eighth was the onlny Texas pitcher to not allow a run,
A Wild Start
Chicago scored five times to grab an early lead against Brown.
Darrin Jackson had a two-run double and Lance Johnson knocked in two more before Mike LaValliere‘s RBI single made it 5-0.
The lead wouldn’t last as the Rangers batted around to score five times off Fernandez and it was 5-5.
Rusty Greer got the scoring underway with a two-run homer. Manuel Lee added a RBI single. David Hulse drove in Lee with a triple before he scored on a single by Jose Canseco.
