Editor’s note: The 1994 playoff games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for the American League contests as well as when those teams are at home during the World Series. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.
Cincinnati’s offense exploded late in the game three of the National League Championship Series as the Reds posted a 9-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves.
With the win in Atlanta, the Reds own a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-seven series. Erik Hanson (0-1) is expected to start the fourth contest for the Reds as the Braves send Steve Avery (0-0) to the hill.
Trailing 4-0, the Reds began their comeback in the top of the sixth as Reggie Sanders tagged Braves starter Tom Glavine with a two-run homer to cut Cincinnati’s deficit in half.
In the seventh, the Reds went to work scoring six times to take commond of the game with an 8-4 margin.
Deion Sanders singled and swiped second for his third steal of the game. He later scored on a single by Hal Morris.
A RBI double by Bret Boone tied the game at 4-4. Cincinnati had runners at second and third when Glavine retired Tony Fernandez on a ground ball.
With Reggie Sanders coming up, Braves manager Bobby Cox decided to replace Glavine with Steve Bedrosian.
Bedrosian walked Sanders which loaded the bases before Ed Taubensee drilled a grand slam to gave the Reds a four-run lead.
Boone added a sacrifice fly in the eighth off Gregg Olson for the final run by the Reds with the tally getting charged to Kent Mercker.
Chuck McElroy (1-0) picked up the win for the Reds as he tossed a scoreless sixth and seventh, while Hector Carrasco and Jeff Brantley closed the game out for the Reds without allowing run in their one inning on the mound.
Reds starter John Smiley lasted three innings as he gave up a three-run blast to Fred McGriff in the third that was followed by a RBI single from Mark Lemke. Tom Browning added two perfect frames for Cincinnati before giving way to McElroy.
Glavine (2-1) was tagged with the loss as he gave up six runs on nine hits with five walks and six strikeouts.
