Editor’s note: The 1994 playoff games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for the American League contests as well as when those teams are at home during the World Series. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.
The Chicago White Sox punched a ticket to the World Series with a 5-3 win over the Cleveland Indians.
With the victory in 10 innings, the White Sox completed their four-game sweep in the best-of-seven American League Championship Series.
Chicago is slated to face the winner of the National League Championship Series, which is currently tied at two games apiece between the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds.
A pair of walks, an error and a sacrifice fly proved to be the difference for the White Sox in the extra inning.
In his fifth inning on the mound, Jack Morris walked Frank Thomas and Julio Franco to begin the 10th.
Robin Ventura hammered a ball to right field as Manny Ramirez misplayed the hit into a two-base error as Thomas was able to score.
Darrin Jackson added a second tally with a sacrifice fly that brought home Franco to put the White Sox on top by two.
Roberto Hernandez (1-0) the win for Chicago as he closed out the affair with two scoreless innings. Morris (0-1) was tagged with the loss as Jose Mesa was needed to get the last two outs in the 10th.
White Sox Build Lead
The White Sox worked their way to a 3-0 advantage with three solo homers against Indians starter Mark Clark, who would pitch five innings before being relieved by Morris.
Jackson got it going in the second inning, while Ventura smacked one in the fourth before Tim Raines hit his shot in the fifth.
Wilson Alvarez was looking for his third win for the White Sox as he blanked the Indians through six frames allowing a singles to Sandy Alomar in the third and Omar Vizquel in the sixth.
However in the seventh, the Chicago starter got into trouble by walking Albert Belle and Eddie Murray.
Paul Sorrento blasted a three-run homer to the delight of the Cleveland fans, who had been rather quiet during the contest.
Alvarez was able to get out of the inning and then toss a perfect eighth before giving way to Hernandez in the ninth.
