Editor’s note: The 1994 playoff games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for the American League contests as well as when those teams are at home during the World Series. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.
Tom Browning had another solid performance for the Cincinnati Reds and his teammates had eight extra base hits on the way to a 9-1 win over the Chicago White Sox in the opener of the 1994 World Series.
The White Sox will look to even the best-of-seven series in game two as Alex Fernandez (2-1) gets the ball against Cincinnati’s Jose Rijo (2-1).
Browning (2-0) went the distance in his second start of the post-season allowing just four hits with a walk and two strikeouts. The only run came in the fifth when Darrin Jackson hit a solo homer.
Kevin Mitchell got the Reds offense rolling against Chicago starter Jack McDowell as the designated hitter blasted a homer leading off the second inning.
A RBI double in the fourth by Hal Morris before Ed Taubensee‘s run-scoring two-bagger in the fifth gave the Reds a 3-0 advantage.
After Jackson’s long ball in the bottom of the fifth, the Reds went to work in the sixth sending McDowell to the showers.
Tony Fernandez smacked a two-run single and Jacob Brumfield hammered a RBI double and it was 6-1.
Cincinnati added two more runs in the seventh. Mitchell had a RBI double off Scott Sanderson, while Brumfield knocked in a run with a single off Atlee Hammaker.
Fernandez hit a solo homer in the ninth off Kirk McCaskill for the final run of the contest.
McDowell (1-2) was tagged with the loss giving up six runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
