Editor’s note: The 1994 playoff games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for the American League contests as well as when those teams are at home during the World Series. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.
A fast start by the Chicago White Sox ensured that the 1994 World Series would be even after two contests.
The White Sox posted 9-6 victory over the Cincinnati Reds to square the best-of-seven series at a game apiece.
Cincinnati’s Riverfront Stadium will be the site for game three as the Reds send John Smiley (1-0) to the mound to face Chicago’s Wilson Alvarez (3-0).
Chicago scored four times in the bottom of the first against Reds starter Jose Rijo.
Julio Franco‘s sacrifice fly was followed by a three-run blast by Robin Ventura.
Rijo’s troubles didn’t stop in the second as he surrendered a RBI double to Joey Cora as the White Sox built a 5-0 advantage.
In the third, Rijo’s day came to an end as he walked Ventura and gave up a single to Darrin Jackson.
Tim Fortugno took over for the Reds and he walked Lance Johnson to load the bases.
Fortugno was able to get out of the jam as Mike LaValliere lined to shortstop Barry Larkin before Ozzie Guillen hit into a fielder’s choice that had Bret Boone cutting down Ventura at the plate. Tim Raines grounded out and the threat was over.
Kevin Mitchell got the Reds on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth with a solo homer off Chicago starter Alex Fernandez.
Unfortunately for the Reds, Fortugno gave up three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jackson drove in a run with a single, while another scored when Reds centerfielder Deion Sanders made an error on the hit.
LaValliere’s single knocked in the final tally of the inning to make it 8-1.
After Hal Morris knocked in Cincinnati’s second run in the fifth with a single, Ventura had a RBI single in the bottom of the frame against Hector Carrasco and it was 9-2.
Morris had another RBI single the seventh before Sanders drilled a three-run homer in the eighth to get the Reds to within three.
Roberto Hernandez tossed a scoreless ninth for Chicago as he earned his third save of the post-season.
Fernandez (3-1) got the win for the White Sox giving up 13 hits in eight innings with two walks and nine strikeouts.
Rijo (2-2) surrendered five runs on six hits with three walks and one strikeout.
