Editor’s note: The 1994 playoff games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for the American League contests as well as when those teams are at home during the World Series. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.
There will be a game seven as the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago White Sox battle for the 1994 World Series title in Comiskey Park.
Cincinnati exploded in the 10th inning to post an 8-5 victory in the sixth contest to even the the best-of-seven series as three games apiece.
Game seven features Tom Browning (3-0) on the mound for the Reds as Jack McDowell (1-3) gets the ball for the White Sox.
With the score tied 3-3 heading into the 10th, Chicago’s Roberto Hernandez (0-1) just didn’t have his stuff as the Reds scored five times against the White Sox closer, who had earned five saves during the post-season.
Deion Sanders walked and swipe second to set the tone for the outburst. Barry Larkin doubled to score Sanders and the Reds were on their way to the win.
After Hal Morris walked and Kevin Mitchell singled, Bret Boone sent Hernandez back to the dugout with a RBI single that kept the bases loaded.
Tony Fernandez knocked in the third run as he greeted Chicago pitcher Kirk McCaskill with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-3. Jacob Brumfield was issued a free pass as the bases were jammed again as Reggie Sanders capped the rally with a two-run single.
Hector Carrasco (2-1), who tossed a scoreless ninth, got the win despite allowing a two-run homer to Frank Thomas in the bottom of the 10th. Tim Fortugno was called from the bullpen to again face Robin Ventura and the result was a strikeout that earned the lefty his first save of the post-season.
Reds starter John Smiley gave up three runs by the time he was sent to the showers with two outs in the eighth inning.
Smiley allowed a RBI single in the third by Tim Raines before Thomas ended his day with his first two-run blast of the contest in the eighth that tied it at 3-3.
Mitchell hit a solo shot in the fourth off White Sox starter Wilson Alvarez before the Reds took a 3-1 lead. Larkin had a RBI single in the fifth and Joe Oliver knocked in the third run with a single in the seventh.
Alvarez gave up six hits with four walks and two strikeouts as he worked nine innings looking for his fifth straight win in the post-season.
