Editor’s note: The 1994 playoff games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for the American League contests as well as when those teams are at home during the World Series. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.
Wilson Alvarez won his fourth straight post-season contest as the Chicago White Sox posted a 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in game three of the 1994 World Series.
The White Sox now hold a two games to one advantage in the best-of-seven series heading into the fourth affair, which will also be in Cincinnati’s Riverfront Stadium.
Game four features Tom Browning (2-0) on the mound for the Reds as the White Sox counter with Jack McDowell (1-2).
Alvarez (4-0) allowed just five hits in 6⅔ innings with a walk and three strikeouts.
Cincinnati’s only run came in the bottom of the sixth as pinch-hitter Jacob Brumfield blasted a solo shot.
In the seventh, Alvarez got in trouble as the Reds loaded the bases with two outs. Tony Fernandez singled, Reggie Sanders walked and Joe Oliver‘s infield hit jammed the base paths.
Scott Sanderson was called from the bullpen and he retired pinch-hitter Jerome Walton on a line drive that was snared by White Sox second baseman Joey Cora.
Sanderson tossed a scoreless eighth and Roberto Hernandez had a runner reach on an error before recording three outs to earn his fourth save of the post-season.
Chicago scored both of its runs in the fifth off Cincinnati starter John Smiley. Alvarez had a sacrifice fly and Tim Raines knocked in the second run with a single.
Smiley (1-1) worked six innings giving up six hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
Hector Carrasco held Chicago scoreless in the seventh, while Chuck McElroy blanked the White Sox the final two frames.
