2006 Tournament: Cubs at Mets

Editor’s note: The 2006 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for any games involving American League teams. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur.

The Chicago Cubs were able to hang on to post a 6-3 victory over the New York Mets during an opening round contest in the National League portion of the 2006 Tournament.

With the win, the Cubs will be on the road in the second round to face the victor of the Florida Marlins at Atlanta Braves affair.

Aramis Ramirez got the the Cubs on the scoreboard in the top of the first with a solo homer off New York starter Tom Glavine.

Glavine allowed a RBI single in the second to Juan Pierre as the Cubs took a 2-0 advantage.

The New York lefty was headed to the showers after surrendering three more runs in the third frame. Jacque Jones knocked in two runs with a double, while Matt Murton capped the rally with a RBI double.

Carlos Zambrano went the distance on the mound for the Cubs as the 5-0 early lead helped him survive giving up 11 hits and five walks as he fanned a dozen.

The Mets touched up Zambrano in the fourth as Paul Lo Duca had a RBI single.

Ramirez added the final run for the Cubs as he grounded out against Darren Oliver to bring Pierre home to make it 6-1.

Shawn Green‘s two-run single in the eighth for New York would cut the deficit for the Mets to three, but they couldn’t get any closer.
