The San Diego Padres continue to survive.
After winning 2-1 in the 11th inning during their 2006 Tournament opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Padres outlasted the San Francisco Giants 7-6 in a second round affair.
The Padres will entertain the Houston Astros in the semifinals of National League portion of the tourney.
San Diego held a 5-0 lead after five innings against Giants starter Matt Cain.
Brian Giles began the scoring in the second with a solo homer, while Padres starting pitcher Woody Williams helped himself with a RBI single.
The Padres went on top 3-0 with a sacrifice fly by Dave Roberts.
In the fifth, the Padres added to their advantage as Mike Cameron‘s RBI double was followed by run-scoring single by Adrian Gonzalez.
San Francisco finally got to Williams with an unearned run in the sixth. Barry Bonds reached on an error and later scored on a single by Pedro Feliz.
The seventh proved to be difficult for Williams as the Giants scored four times to tie it at 5-5.
Randy Winn smacked a solo shot with two outs in the frame as a pinch-hitter for Cain.
As the Giants went back to the top of their batting order, Omar Vizquel singled and Ray Durham walked before Bonds blasted a three-run homer to even the score.
It didn’t take long for the Padres to bounce back against Giants reliever Mike Stanton. Cameron and Gonzalez had back-to-back RBI doubles and it was 7-5.
Williams worked a scoreless eighth before Trevor Hoffman took over on the mound for the Padres in the ninth.
Despite giving up a two-out solo long ball to Durham, Hoffman was able to retire Bonds on a fly ball to end the contest.
