Chris Carpenter tossed a five-hitter as he led the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-1 win over the Colorado Rockies in the opening round of the 2006 Tournament.
With the victory, the Cardinals will now face the winner of the Milwaukee Brewers at Philadelphia Phillies contest in the second round.
The Cardinals produced some runs early to set the tone for the affair as Carpenter was perfect through the first four innings.
Yadier Molina‘s RBI single in the second gave St. Louis a 1-0 advantage against Colorado starter Jason Jennings.
In the third, Scott Rolen‘s two-run homer provided all of the offense Carpenter would need.
Carpenter’s only blemish came in the fifth when Matt Holliday blasted a solo homer leading off the frame. He finished with seven strikeouts.
Holliday added a single in the seventh to lead the Rockies with two hits, while Yorvit Torrealba, Todd Helton and pinch-hitter Kazuo Matsui had the other hits.
Jennings worked eight innings allowing seven hits with five strikeouts.
Ronnie Belliard topped the Cardinals with three hits.
