The 1948 Cleveland Indians broke open a tight contest on the way to an 8-3 victory over the 1961 New York Yankees.
Leading 3-2 after seven innings, the Indians scored five times over the final pair of frames to put the game away.
A RBI triple by Larry Doby ended the day for New York starter Rollie Sheldon, while Jim Coates was greeted by a run-scoring from Eddie Robinson as the Indians held a 5-2 advantage
In the ninth, a three-run blast by Joe Gordon finished the scoreing for the Indians.
Cleveland pitcher Satchel Paige went the distance allowing six hits, two walks with eight strikeouts.
Sheldon (5-8) got the loss for the Yankees as he surrendered five runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts. Coates gave up three runs on three hits.
Elston Howard, who had three hits in the affair, gave New York an early lead with a run-scoring single in the first inning.
New York’s lead didn’t last as Cleveland’s Ken Keltner led off the second with a solo homer. Robinson’s RBI single put the Indians on top 2-1.
Mickey Mantle smashed his 41st homer of the season to start the fourth, which was his 98th RBI.
The Indians responded quickly in the top of the fifth as Hank Edwards smacked a RBI double to make it 3-2.
Howard hit a solo homer in the ninth, which was his 13th of the season.
New York welcomes the 1968 Detroit Tigers to Yankee Stadium for a four-game series.
Bud Daley (6-10) gets the ball for the Yankees in the opener as the Tigers are scheduled to start John Hiller.
