It might be difficult for 1968 Detroit Tigers manager Mayo Smith to pick a star of the game.
Smith would likely pick two and call it a day after his Tigers posted a 1-0 victory over the 1961 New York Yankees.
John Hiller tossed the five-hit shutout and Dick McAuliffe had two of Detroit’s four hits, including a homer.
Hiller and his New York counterpart Bud Daley worked out of minor jams as they shutdown the opposing offenses with the contest being scoreless after five frames.
McAuliffe led off the top of the sixth for the Tigers with a solo blast against Daley that produced the only run.
Daley (6-11) went seven innings allowing four hits with five strikeouts. Tex Clevenger fanned two as he blanked the Tigers over the final two innings.
Hiller walked three and struck out three to earn the win.
In the second affair of the four-game set, Whitey Ford (11-6) gets the ball for the Yankees, while Denny McLain is slated to start for the Tigers.
