Mickey Lolich needed just a run to get a victory as the 1968 Detroit Tigers beat the 1927 New York Yankees 1-0.

Lolich tossed a two-hitter and walked one with eight strikeouts in the dominating performance.

The Detroit lefty is now 2-1 against New York in four starts. Overall, the Tigers hold an 8-7 advantage over the Yankees in the season series with seven contests remaining between the two squads.

The only score in the contest against New York pitcher Urban Shocker came in the top of the fourth on a solo homer by Tigers shortstop Mickey Stanley.

Shocker (11-4) gave up just four hits in the affair and fanned four in his complete game effort.

Both pitchers had long stretches without base runners.

After Stanley’s homer, Shocker retired 14 straight until a single by Don Wert in the eighth.

Bob Meusel singled in the second for the Yankees and then Lolich sent down 13 in row until he walked Babe Ruth in the seventh.

New York’s other hit was by Mark Koenig with one out in the ninth, but Lolich induced Ruth to hit into a double play to finish off the Yankees.

The Yankees welcome the 2005 Chicago White Sox to New York for a two-game series.

Wilcy Moore (13-4) is slated to start the opener for New York, while the White Sox expect to have Jose Contreras on the mound.
