Pitching was one display at Yankee Stadium with only six hits between the 1927 New York Yankees and 2005 Chicago White Sox.
It was one big mistake that made the difference as the Yankees beat the White Sox 2-0.
Lou Gehrig led off the second inning against White Sox starter Jose Contreras with a double before Tony Lazzeri smashed his 16th homer of season to provide the Yankees all of the runs they would need.
New York pitcher Wilcy Moore dominated the White Sox allowing just two hits, a walk and four strikeouts in his complete game effort.
Moore walked Jermaine Dye in the opening frame and Chicago didn’t have a base runner from that point until Tadahito Iguchi doubled leading off the seventh to break up the no-hitter.
In the eighth, the White Sox attempted to rally as Aaron Rowand reached on an error and Juan Uribe singled. However, that was all the White Sox could muster as Moore retired pinch-hitter Carl Everett and then Scott Podsednik ending the threat.
Contreras seemed to deserve a better fate as he gave up just four hits in seven innings with a walk and six strikeouts. Cliff Politte tossed a perfect eighth for the White Sox.
After the second inning, Babe Ruth had the only hits for the Yankees against Contreras with a single in the third and a triple in the fifth.
Dutch Ruether (3-9) will start the finale of the two-game series for New York, while Chicago counters with Orlando Hernandez.
