Walter Johnson shut down the powerful 1961 New York Yankees as the Washington Senators were victorious 6-0 at Griffith Stadium.
Johnson went the distance giving up three singles as he didn’t walk a hitter and recorded eight strikeouts.
After retiring the first 13 batters of the contest, Johnson surrendered a single to Yogi Berra to break the string.
The other two singles Johnson gave up were to Tony Kubek in the seventh and Bobby Richardson in the ninth.
New York starter Whitey Ford blanked Washington until the fourth inning when the Senators scored three times.
Roger Peckinpaugh walked with the bases loaded for the first tally, while Muddy Ruel doubled to drive in the other two runs.
In the fifth, the Senators went on top 5-0 as Bucky Harris tripled to knock in a run before he scored on a RBI single by Joe Judge.
A RBI double in the sixth by Harris produced the final run for the Senators.
Judge and Ruel both had three hits to lead Washington.
The two teams return to action with a single game at Yankee Stadium.
Bill Stafford is slated to start for the Yankees, while George Mogridge goes to the mound for Washington.
