A wild affair ended with the 1927 New York Yankees having a four-game winning streak snapped as the 1924 Washington Senators finished on the good side of a 10-8 score.
The Yankees appeared to be on solid footing after scoring twice in the top of the fourth inning on a single by Bob Meusel and a ground out by Joe Dugan.
However from that point, the Senators responded in a big way in the bottom of the frame with eight runs on eight hits with 13 batters taking a turn at the plate.
Washington’s outburst began with four straight singles off New York starter Herb Pennock. Goose Goslin and Joe Judge both scored to tie it at 2-2 on hits by Ossie Bluege and Roger Peckinpaugh.
After Muddy Ruel walked to load the bases, the Senators took the lead on a RBI single by starting pitcher George Mogridge.
The only out that Pennock would record in the inning happened when Peckinpaugh tried to score on Mogridge’s hit, but he would get nailed at the plate on a throw by Meusel.
Earl McNeely singled and then Bucky Harris walked with the bases loaded to give the Senators a 4-2 lead. Sam Rice sent Pennock (6-10) to the showers with a two-run single.
New York manager Miller Huggins called in Wilcy Moore from the bullpen and he was greeted by a RBI single from Goslin, which was his second hit of the inning.
The last run came on a sacrifice fly by Judge as the Senators held an 8-2 advantage.
The Yankees were able to respond, but it just wasn’t enough to overcome the fourth inning.
In the fifth, Earle Combs had a run-scoring single and Babe Ruth added a sacrifice fly to cut New York’s deficit to four.
Meusel walked to begin the sixth and he later scored when New York catcher Pat Collins hit into a double play and it was 8-5.
The sixth inning proved to be too much for the Yankees as the Senators got to Myles Thomas, who was in his second inning of relief.
Rice picked up a RBI double with Rice driving in the final of the game for the Senators with a sacrifice fly.
Mogridge got in trouble in the top of the seventh as the Yankees closed the gap with three runs.
Tony Lazzeri walked with the bases loaded and then the Yankees added a run on an error by Ruel, the Washington catcher. Dugan finished the rally with a RBI single.
Firpo Marberry earned a save by working the last two innings for the Senators. He gave up a single to Mark Koenig in the eight and fanned Collins to end the game.
Urban Shocker (11-4) gets the start for the Yankees in the third contest of the four-game series, while Washington counters with Tom Zachary.
