George Mogridge must have finally been smiling.
Mogridge tossed a five-hitter as he led the 1924 Washington Senators to a 5-0 victory over the 1961 New York Yankees.
It was the fourth start of the season for Mogridge against New York and his first win over the Yankees after three losses. He fanned just one batter and didn’t have a walk.
For New York, it was the sixth time that the Yankees have failed to score in a contest.
The Senators scored twice in the second inning against New York starter Bill Stafford to produce all of the offense that was needed.
Joe Judge singled and then sprinted home on a triple by Ossie Bluege. Bluege crossed the plate on a ground out by Roger Peckinpaugh.
In the fourth, Washington added to its margin thanks to a pair of errors by the Yankees.
Sam Rice began the rally with a single before Goose Goslin reached on an miscue by New York shortstop Tony Kubek. Stafford couldn’t field a grounder by Judge and the bases were loaded.
Bluege had a sacrifice fly for the first run and the second came on a RBI single by Peckinpaugh.
Earl McNeely drove in the final run of the affair with a sacrifice fly in the seventh, which was the last inning for Stafford (13-5). The New York pitcher allowed six hits to go with four strikeouts. Jim Coates worked a scoreless eighth for the Yankees.
The third contest of the four-game series features Ralph Terry (5-9) on the mound for the Yankees as the Senators start Tom Zachary.
