The 1927 New York Yankees broke open a tight game scoring six times over the last three frames on the way to an 8-3 victory over the 1924 Washington Senators.

Down a run heading into the seventh, the Yankees scored four times off Washington starting pitcher Tom Zachary to grab the lead for good.

After Bob Meusel singled, a two-base error by Goose Goslin on a ball hit by Benny Bengough opened the door for the Senators.

New York starting pitcher Urban Shocker slapped a single that tied the affair at 3-3.

Earle Combs added a RBI single and Babe Ruth eventually followed with a two-run double and the Yankees were on top 6-3.

In the ninth against Paul Zahniser, Combs knocked in a run with a triple and then scored on a single by Mark Koenig to give the Yankees their final margin.

Shocker (12-4) went the distance to get the win although he gave up 10 hits, walked two and fanned one.

Zachary worked seven innings and also allowed 10 hits, six runs with three strikeouts. In his two innings, Zahniser surrendered two runs on three hits and walked three.

New York’s Early Lead

The affair was scoreless until the top of the fourth when Lou Gehrig smashed a two-run homer for his 28th long ball of the season.

The Senators quickly answered in their half of the fourth with a RBI triple by Ossie Bluege and a run-scoring single by Roger Peckinpaugh.

Washington took a 3-2 lead in the fifth when Earl McNeely doubled to begin the inning. Two outs later, Goslin doubled to give the Senators the lead.

Wilcy Moore (14-4) is scheduled to start the finale of the four-game series for the Yankees, while the Senators counter with John Martina.
