After four straight losses in his last six starts, Ralph Terry finally ended up on the right side of the score as the 1961 New York Yankees defeated the 1924 Washington Senators 2-1.
Terry (6-9) went the distance allowing just five hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts.
The Senators scored quickly when Earl McNeely led off the game with a triple and the came home on a single by player-manager Bucky Harris. Washington’s final hit of the contest was a single by Muddy Ruel in the fifth.
Washington starter Tom Zachary was nearly as good as Terry as he surrendered six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
New York picked up both of its runs in the second inning. Elston Howard coaxed a walk from Zachary and then Yogi Berra and Bill Skowron singled to tie it at 1-1.
Billy Gardner put the Yankees on top with a sacrifice fly that produced what turned out to be the final tally of the affair.
In the finale of the four-game series, the Yankees will have Rollie Sheldon (6-8) on the mound with the Senators countering with John Martina.
