A two-run single Elston Howard in the third inning proved to be the difference as the 1961 New York Yankees picked up a 2-1 victory in finale of a four-game series against the 1924 Washington Senators.
Batting in the lead off spot, Bobby Richardson singled to begin the rally against Washington starter John Martina.
Tony Kubek reached on an error by Senators shortstop Roger Peckinpaugh. Roger Maris fouled out to Washington catcher Muddy Ruel before Mickey Mantle walked to load the bases.
Howard’s hit scored Richardson and Kubek and the Yankees grabbed the lead for good.
Washington’s run came in the first inning against New York starter Rollie Sheldon (7-8), who went the distance allowing five hits and a walk with four strikeouts.
Sam Rice got things underway with a two-out single. Goose Goslin walked and then Joe Judge knocked in Rice with a single.
Like Sheldon, Martina also tossed a complete game surrendering five hits. He fanned eight and walked three.
New York is scheduled to visit the 2005 Chicago White Sox for a four-game set in Comiskey Park.
In the opener for the Yankees, Bud Daley (7-11) gets the start with the White Sox countering with Orlando Hernandez.
