The offense struggle seems to be real for the 1961 New York Yankees as they fell 5-1 to the 2005 Chicago White Sox in Comiskey Park.
In their last four games, the Yankees have been out scored 12-5 and they have spilt the contests during the stretch.
White Sox starter Orlando Hernandez tossed a complete game allowing six hits with three walks and nine strikeouts.
The only blemish for Hernandez was a solo homer by Roger Maris in the fourth inning. It was his 44th of the season and the blast puts him in a tie for the team lead with Mickey Mantle.
Chicago grabbed the lead in the third inning against New York starter Bud Daley on a two-run homer by Scott Podsednik.
After the long ball by Maris cut New York’s deficit in half, the White Sox went to work in the bottom of the fifth.
Tadahito Iguchi smacked a two-run single that gave Chicago a 4-1 advantage.
The final tally for the White Sox came when A.J. Pierzynski tagged releiver Jim Coates for a homer in the seventh.
Daley (7-12) surrendered four hits and three walks as he fanned three in six innings. Coates gave up one hit and had a pair of strikeouts in his two frames for New York.
The Yankees are sending Whitey Ford (13-6) to the mound in the the second affair of the four-game series, while the White Sox are going with Mark Buehrle.
