Ralph Terry lost everything with one swing as the 1961 New York Yankees fell 1-0 to the 2005 Chicago White Sox.
Scott Podsednik had all of the cardboard fans smiling with his walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.
Up to that point, Terry had not allowed a hit with only Paul Konerko and Juan Uribe reaching base for Chicago.
Konerko’s grounder in the fifth broke up the perfect game as New York shortstop Tony Kubek had a two-base error.
Uribe walked to begin the ninth and he went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chicago pitcher Jon Garland to set up Podsednik.
Retiring 10 in a row to begin the contest, Garland was nearly as good as Terry in his complete game effort as he gave up four hits and had five strikeouts.
The Yankees had only two opportunities to score.
With two outs in the seventh, Mickey Mantle walked and Elston Howard doubled before Garland induced Yogi Berra to hit a routine fly ball to left.
In the ninth, Richardson singled, Mantle walked and Howard grounded out to end the potenital rally.
New York travels to the 1948 Cleveland Indians for a three-game series. Rollie Sheldon (7-8) will start the opener for the Yankees for New York with Satchel Paige getting the ball for the Indians.
