A tight game turned into a wild affair as the 1924 Washington Senators outlasted the 1927 New York Yankess 10-5 in 11 innings.

With the contest tied at 3-3 after nine frames, both teams scored twice in the 10th inning to set up a five-run outburst by the Senators that made the difference.

Myles Thomas was on the mound for the Yankees to begin the 11th with the score at 5-5. Things went awry very early for the New York hurler.

Washington’s Roger Peckinpaugh singled and Muddy Ruel hit a two-run homer to make it 7-5 and the onslaught began.

After Thomas got an out, Earl McNeely singled before Washington player-manager Bucky Harris smacked a two-run blast that put the Senators on top 9-5.

Dutch Ruether took over for Thomas and New York’s situation didn’t improve.

Sam Rice went two bases on an error by New York second baseman Tony Lazzeri. Rice came home with the final tally on a single by Goose Goslin.

Ruether was able to work out of the inning thanks to a double play, but the damage had been done.

In the bottom of the 11th, Washington pitcher Firpo Marberry closed the game out with a perfect inning for the win as he bounced back after giving up two runs in the 10th.

Early Score for Washington

The Senators grabbed an early 1-0 advantage in the first inning.

McNeely tripled off New York starter Herb Pennock and Harris followed with a sacrifice fly.

Having posed a threat in the first and not scored against Washington starter George Mogridge, the Yankees took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second.

Pennock doubled home a run before Earle Combs put New York on top with a RBI ground out.

In the fourth, Washington regained the lead as Ruel and McNeely each had RBI singles and it was 3-2 in favor of the Senators.

The Yankees tied the contest at 3-3 in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Mark Koenig.

The 10th Inning

As the contest entered extra innings, each offense applied pressure to the opposing pitchers.

A double by McNeely and a run-scoring single by Harris ended the day for Pennock.

New York manager Miller Huggins called Thomas from the bullpen and he eventually allowed a RBI single by Joe Judge, which gave the Senators a 5-3 lead.

The Yankees were able to answer in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs.

Combs singled to start the 10th as Mogridge faced his last hitter. Harris brought in Marberry to stop a pending New York rally.

Koenig’s single sent Combs to third. Babe Ruth‘s sacrifice fly brought home the first run of the inning. After Lou Gehrig‘s double moved Koenig to third, Bob Meusel‘s sacrifice fly tied the contest sending the game to the 11th.

The Yankees travel to Fenway Park for a two-game series against Boston.

Urban Shocker is scheduled to start for New York, while the Red Sox will have Tim Wakefield on the mound.
