Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris homered in the same game for the third time this season as the 1961 New York Yankees defeated the 1924 Washington Senators 5-2.
Mantle’s third long ball of year came in the first inning against Washington starter George Mogridge.
Tony Kubek singled with one out and Maris hit a fly ball to left for the second out. Mantle drive gave the Yankees a 2-0 advantage.
In the fourth, the Yankees increased their lead to 4-0 as Elston Howard and Clete Boyer had back-to-back RBI singles.
The Senators manufactured a run to get on the scoreboard in the fifth against New York starter Bill Stafford. Muddy Ruel‘s sacrifice fly made it 4-1.
Maris hit his fifth homer of the season with a solo shot in the sixth for New York’s final tally.
Washington’s second run of the contest came on a Joe Judge RBI single in the eighth.
Stafford went the distance for the Yankees allowing seven hits and two runs with five strikeouts.
Mantle, Maris and Boyer topped the Yankees with two hits apiece, while Goose Goslin also had two hits for the Senators.
The Yankees visit Boston for a two-game series at Fenway Park.
Ralph Terry will get the start for the Yankees with Tim Wakefield taking his turn for the Red Sox.
