Earl Wilson continues to dominate for the 1968 Detroit Tigers.
Wilson tossed his fourth complete game victory in five starts this season for a 4-1 win over the 1927 New York Yankees.
The Detroit righthander allowed seven hits and fanned five to give him a 4-0 mark against New York.
A RBI single by Earle Combs in the seventh inning prevented Wilson from being able to blank the Yankees.
All of Detroit’s runs came on a pair of homers.
In the first inning, Al Kaline singled and scored on a two-run bomb by Willie Horton.
Mickey Stanley provided the final runs in the eighth. With two outs, Dick McAuliffe singled and Stanley drove a shot over the fence to clinch the victory.
Herb Pennock (7-11), who has struggled against the Tigers this season, was tagged with the loss. He went eight innings surrendering seven hits with four strikeouts.
Pennock is 0-4 this season against the Tigers in five starts.
In the second contest of the three-game series, Urban Shocker (13-4) gets the start for the Yankees, while the Tigers counter with Mickey Lolich.
