Urban Shocker tossed his third straight complete game victory as the 1927 New York Yankees posted a 5-1 win over the 1968 Detroit Tigers.
Shocker (14-4) scattered nine hits, while walking one and fanning one.
The only blemish for Shocker came in the seventh after his teammates staked him to a five-run advantage. Pinch-hitter Gates Brown produced the tally with a sacrifice fly.
New York got off to a quick start with a pair unearned runs in the top of the first.
With two outs, Detroit starter Mickey Lolich gave up a single to Babe Ruth before walking Lou Gehrig and Tony Lazzeri.
Bob Meusel hit a grounder that Tigers second baseman Dick McAuliffe misplayed, which led to both runs scoring.
The Yankees added another run in the third as Ruth doubled and scored on a single by Lazzeri.
Earle Combs smacked his ninth homer of the season with one out in the seventh to knock in two runs and end the day for Lolich.
Lolich surrendered seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
Daryl Patterson finished the seventh for the Tigers before giving way to Pat Dobson, who threw the final two frames
Wilcy Moore (14-6) gets the ball for New York in the finale of the three-game series with Joe Sparma getting the start for the Tigers.
