27 * 61 Replay 121: 61 Yankees at 68 Tigers

Mickey Lolich went the distance on the mound for the 1968 Detroit Tigers in a 6-4 victory over the 1961 New York Yankees.

Lolich had eight strikeouts as the lefty limited the the Yankees to five hits, although two were homers that drove in all of New York’s runs.

Dick McAuliffe smacked a homer to lead off the game against New York starter Ralph Terry.

New York shortstop Tony Kubek tied the affair in the third with a solo shot.

The Tigers grabbed a 4-1 advantage in the third thanks to some help from the New York defense.

Al Kaline reached on an error by Yankees third baseman Clete Boyer to begin the rally. After Terry retired Willie Horton and Norm Cash, Jim Northrup singled.

At that point, New York left fielder Yogi Berra misplayed a ball hit by Detroit catcher Bill Freehan into a triple. Don Wert capped the outburst with a RBI single.

In the sixth, the Yankees got a blast from Roger Maris to tie it at 4-4.

Lolich walked Terry and Boyer before Maris drilled his team-high 48th homer of the season.

With one out in the eighth, Northrup ended Terry’s day with a two-run homer that put the Tigers up for good.

Terry (6-11) allowed a dozen hits and fanned four before Jim Coates got the last two outs in the eighth for the Yankees.

Rollie Sheldon (8-8) will start for the Yankees in the finale of the three-game series, while the Tigers counter with Joe Sparma.
