Mike Gazella made the most of his rare start as the 1927 New York Yankees blanked the 1970 Baltimore Orioles 5-0 behind the pitching of Waite Hoyt.
Gazella had a pair of hits and knocked in two runs, while Hoyt (17-5) allowed three hits with five strikeouts in his complete game effort.
The Yankees picked up their initial tally in the second inning, but had an opportunity for more.
With two outs, Tony Lazzeri and Bob Meusel both singled off Baltimore starter Jim Palmer. Gazella doubled to bring home Lazzeri, Orioles right fielder Frank Robinson gunned down Meusel at the plate as he tried to score from first on the play.
In the fourth, Gazella made sure Meusel crossed the plate this time as he tripled after the Yankees left fielder had doubled to lead off the frame.
New York back-up catcher Benny Bengough singled to allow Gazella to score.
Palmer left the game with one out in the sixth after Earle Combs his a solo shot, which was his 11th of the season. Pete Richert shut the door for the Yankees offense until the ninth inning.
Eddie Watt took over in the ninth for the Orioles and he was the victum of an error. After Lou Gehrig tripled and Lazeri lined out, Baltimore shortstop Mark Belanger made a two-base error that gave the Yankees their final run.
Herb Pennock (7-11) is scheduled to start for New York in the finale of the three-game series with the Orioles sending Mike Cuellar to the mound.
