27 * 61 Replay 125: 27 Yankees at 70 Orioles

The 1927 New York Yankees found a broom in Memorial Stadium to complete a three-game sweep of the 1970 Baltimore Orioles with a 6-3 victory to take the series.

Baltimore starter Mike Cuellar got tagged early as the Orioles fell behind 3-0 in the first inning.

Earle Combs led off the game with a single and two outs later, Lou Gehrig singled to set the stage for Tony Lazzeri to blast a three-run homer, which was his 22nd of the season.

An error and a walk allowed the Orioles to get a run in the second off New York starter Herb Pennock. Brooks Robinson doubled and moved to third when Davey Johnson reached on an error by New York catcher Pat Collins.

After Elrod Hendricks walked, Cuellar was able to lift a fly ball deep enough to Babe Ruth in right field that the Orioles third baseman was able to score.

However, the Yankees answered with three runs in the third to build a 6-1 advantage.

Ruth started the outburst with a solo homer, which was his 47th of the year. After Gehrig struck out, Lazzeri single and Bob Meusel drilled a two-run blast for his 10th long ball of the season.

Cuellar survived until the fifth inning as he surrendered six runs on seven hits, while fanning seven.

Dick Hall and Jim Hardin finished up the mound for the Orioles with two scoreless innings apiece.

The Orioles showed some life in the eighth against Pennock when Brooks Robinson had a RBI ground out and Merv Rettenmund added a run-scoring single.

Pennock (8-11) went the distance was he won for the second time in three starts with a complete game effort. He gave up five hits with one strikeout, but he a plagued by seven walks.

Next up for the Yankees is a make-up game at home with the 2004 Boston Red Sox.

New York will start Urban Shocker (14-4), while Tim Wakefield gets the ball for the Red Sox.
