Urban Shocker tossed a three-hitter for the 1927 New York Yankees as the squad won its fifth game in a row with a 3-1 victory over the 2004 Boston Red Sox.

In the single make-up game at Yankee Stadium, Shocker (15-4) gave up an unearned run in the first and didn’t allow a hit after Trot Nixon‘s single in the second inning as he fanned three and walked one.

The Red Sox scored in the first frame as Orlando Cabrera reached on an error by the New York pitcher. After Manny Ramirez singled, David Ortiz doubled to gave Boston a 1-0 advantage.

In the fourth, the Yankees tied the affair thanks to miscue by Ramirez in left field.

After Boston starter Tim Wakefield had retired the first two batters, he walked Lou Gehrig. Tony Lazzeri smacked a ball to left that Ramirez turned into a three-base error that had Gehrig jogging home.

A RBI single in the fifth by Earle Combs gave the Yankees the lead before they added their final run in the sixth on a double by Bob Meusel.

Wakefield went seven innings for the Red Sox allowing all of the runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Ramiro Mendoza gave up a hit in the eight before Shocker shut down Boston in the ninth for the win.

The Yankees return to the road for a two-game series against the 1972 Oakland A’s.

New York is scheduled to start Wilcy Moore (14-7), while Vida Blue gets the ball for the A’s.
