The six-game winning streak is over for the 1927 New York Yankees.
Dave Hamilton of the 1972 Oakland A’s limited New York to three hits on the way to a 7-0 victory over the Yankees.
Hamilton gave up singles to Bob Meusel in the second, Tony Lazzeri in the seventh and Joe Dugan in the eighth. He didn’t walk a batter and fanned six.
Oakland got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth against New York starter George Pipgras.
Pipgras walked Gene Tenace with two outs and George Hendrick followed with a homer to give the A’s a 2-0 lead.
A RBI single by Ted Kubiak in the sixth that gave the A’s a 3-0 advantage. In the seventh, Mike Epstein added a two-run double and the A’s were up by five.
Myles Thomas took over on the mound for Pipgras and the A’s tagged him for their final two runs in the eighth.
Joe Rudi knocked in the first tally with a single and Reggie Jackson hit a double to produce the final run.
Pipgras (12-8) worked seven innings surrendering nine hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Next up for the Yankees is a five-game series at the 2004 Boston Red Sox.
Waite Hoyt (17-5) is slated to start for the Yankees in the opener, while the Red Sox counter with Curt Schilling.
