Ralph Terry tossed a four-hitter as the 1961 New York Yankees blasted five homers in a 9-1 victory over the 2004 Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
Terry, who went the distance, allowed two hits by Johnny Damon and one each by Jason Varitek and Orlando Cabrera with seven strikeouts.
Boston starter Tim Wakefield shut down the Yankees through three innings before he gave up a pair of homers in the fourth.
After striking out Mickey Mantle, Wakefield got tagged for a solo shot by Yogi Berra. Bill Skowron singled and then Elston Howard, who had five hits in the affair, drilled a two-run homer to put the Yankees on top 3-0.
A double by Varitek leading off the bottom of the fifth ended Terry’s streak of retiring 12 straight batters.
Wakefield gave up his eighth and final hit in the sixth, which was a homer by Skowron that made it 4-0.
The Red Sox scored their only run against Terry in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by David Ortiz.
In the seventh, Boston’s Mike Timlin made a mistake to Roger Maris that resulted in a two-run bomb that put the Yankees on top 6-1.
Timlin didn’t make it though the eighth for Boston as he gave up a RBI single to Howard. Mike Myers allowed the other run in the frame on a groundout by Clete Boyer and it was 8-1.
The Yankees picked up their final tally on a solo homer by Mantle off Alan Embree in the ninth.
In the series finale of the two-game set, the Yankees will have Rollie Sheldon on the mound, while the Red Sox counter with Derek Lowe.
