Urban Shocker pitched the 1927 New York Yankees to a third straight win over the 2004 Boston Red Sox with a 7-0 victory in Fenway Park.
Shocker (16-5) went the distance allowing seven hits with three strikeouts as he didn’t walk a batter.
Lou Gehrig and Tony Lazzeri drilled back-to-back homers off Boston starter Tim Wakefield to give the Yankees the lead in the second inning. Gehrig now has 35 long balls this season with 105 RBI, while Lazzeri has 23 homers and 94 RBI.
The score remained the same until the top of the eighth when the Yankees added three more runs.
The first tally came on a triple by Earle Combs. With Ramiro Mendoza now on the mound for Boston, Mark Koenig reached on an error by Kevin Youkilis at third as Combs crossed the plate with the second run.
After singles by Babe Ruth and Gehrig, Keith Foulke took over the pitching duties and he was greeted by an infield single by Lazzeri gave the Yankees a 5-0 advantage.
New York scored twice in the ninth off Terry Adams on a RBI double by Koenig and a run-scoring single by Ruth, who has driven in 115 runs this season.
Wilcy Moore (15-7) starts for the Yankees in the fourth affair in the five-game series, while the Red Sox counter with Derek Lowe.
