A fast start by the 2004 Boston Red Sox led to a 4-1 win over the 1927 New York Yankees in Fenway Park.
Boston’s victory stopped the Yankees three-game winning streak over the Red Sox.
New York’s Wilcy Moore gave up singles to Johnny Damon and Orlando Cabrera in the bottom of the first inning before Manny Ramirez doubled to put Boston in front 1-0.
After David Ortiz popped out, Jason Varitek drilled a three-run homer and Boston led 4-0.
In the second inning, Pat Collins knocked in what turned out to be the only run for the Yankees with a single.
Derek Lowe went the distance for Boston giving up eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts as the Yankees left eight runners on base.
Moore (15-8) tossed six innings and surrendered a double to Lowe in the second, which was the fifth and final hit he allowed as he fanned five and walked three. Dutch Ruether worked perfect innings for New York in the seventh and eighth with a pair of strikeouts.
Myles Thomas (8-6) gets a rare start for the Yankees in the finale of the five-game series that has been played in a span of three days. The Red Sox have Bronson Arroyo scheduled to get the ball.
