Manager Miller Huggins needed innings from his starter for the 1927 New York York Yankees as his squad played its fifth game in three days.
Perhaps unsure of the results when he made his selection, Huggins got what he wanted from Myles Thomas in the finale of the five-game series as the Yankees outlasted the 2004 Boston Red Sox 9-5 in Fenway Park.
Thomas (9-6) went the distance giving up five runs through the first six frames before shutting down the Red Sox. Making just his fourth start of the season, Thomas allowed 10 hits with eight walks and three strikeouts.
New York’s offense built four-run advantage to help the cause, but after six innings Boston was on top 5-4.
The Yankees responded with five runs in the seventh to take back the lead as they ousted Boston starter Bronson Arroyo.
Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig led off the seventh with singles. After Tony Lazzeri struck out, Bob Meusel doubled and tied it at 5-5.
Joe Dugan followed with another single that scored two more runs for the Yankees. The rally continued as Johnny Grabowski single.
Boston manager Terry Francona was pacing in the dugout as he waiting for Ramiro Mendoza to get warmed up n the bullpen.
Before Francona could make the swap on the mound, Thomas smacked a ball that Boston left fielder Manny Ramirez turned into a double and it was 8-5.
With Mendoza finally on the mound, Mark Koenig added a sacrifice fly for the final run before Ruth grounded out to end the inning.
From that point, Thomas slammed the door on Boston giving up a single in the ninth before getting a double play to finish off the Red Sox.
Early Lead
Ruth put the Yankees up 1-0 in the first with a RBI single, which was the 116th run he has knocked in this season.
In the third, Lazzeri drove in a run with a single before Meusel added two more with a double that made it 4-0.
The Red Sox came to life in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs. Orlando Cabrera had a RBI single and then scored from first on a double by David Ortiz.
A sacrifice fly by Manny Ramirez in the fifth and another RBI double by Ortiz brought the Red Sox even at 4-4.
Johnny Damon gave the Red Sox a 5-4 lead with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth.
